The Savage River

Tr'at'egheth No', is Lower Tanana dialect meaning “From Cottonwood Creek.” This is the native name for the Savage River. I encountered the Savage River on my first excursion to Denali during a back country backpacking trip in the Fall of 2020. The recorded footage is from a return trip to Denali in August of 2021. The goal, to record the sound of the river for archival purposes and to examine the fidelity of the soundscape at that particular moment. When listening, we can gain crucial information about the health of the river and the rest of the watershed.

Here is a spectrogram image of the Savage River. This is just past the main trail North of the park road where the river starts to become rapid and tumultuous. Notice how much of the bandwidth is in the low frequency range.

Only 25% of Alaska has roads, the rest of this vast wilderness is accessible only by plane, boat sled or in our case, mostly by foot. Take a peek into the amazing backpacking trip I took with my friend in September 2020. It’s a quick glance at the diversity and amazing sounds of Denali National Park and Preserve.

Place: A Drain Tube underneath the Campbell Creek Trail in Anchorage, AK. (c.2021)

This melodica was discovered at the Goodwill in Anchorage on Old Seward. A friend I was traveling with found it. We purchased it for $5. The music we were able to make with it, brought an incredible amount joy and connection with the people. In this piece, “I said, I’m a witness”, what I am playing is in response to what I am receiving from the space, commenting, on what I am experiencing in the present.
