West Edge Opera Music Director Jonathan Khuner:
'The creators of our four scenes have a unifying concern with the dignity and transcendence of individual experience within the constraints of American social history. Within this unifying theme, our four scenes cover a wide range of musical/theatric styles, from Sacajawea’s embroidery on Native American folk art, to Madame Theremin’s spin-off on jazz, reggae and hip-hop elements, then Least of My Children’s  classical orientation with modern  non-linear stagecraft and The Road to Wellville’s farcical pop-style tilt.'

New Composition Process Explanation.

Most of us compose from a place of inspiration, but we know that containing that inspiration can be quite a bit of work. Let’s explore the ancient verse of the Emerald Tablet As Above, So It Is Below

Prerequisites aren’t required, but it does help to have a working knowledge of the following: melody, intervals/inversions, form and structure.

Black Lives Are Magic. Portland Premiere

Black Lives Are Magic is a set of short poems inspired by the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. These pieces are intended to spark conversation and reflection in a way that is lifted in resolve.

Black Lives Matter, Period., to Harriet, and happiness spell will be premiered on pianoforte by Rory Cowal of Portland Oregon. We connected during the dynamic protests that were happening in the city in the summer of 2020. A massive effort from local BIPOC leaders to unite the people through art was how the connection was made.

These pieces were composed while in Residency at the Lou Harrison House Music, Arts, and Ecology in Joshua Tree, CA. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have focused on creating a work that is necessary and also healing in its intent.

Be sure to add the Noon Concert: Rory Cowal hosted by Portland State University to your calendar.
